Dr. Gary Mathews
Dr. Mathews was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, and has lived in the Acadiana area since 1995. Upon moving to Acadiana, he soon realized what a special place we have here and felt like this is where he belonged. Dr. Mathews completed his undergraduate studies at LSU in Shreveport, Louisiana with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He went on to receive his medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport and complete a residency program in Family Practice there, also. Dr. Mathews completed a second residency program in Diagnostic Radiology at LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport during which he served one year as Chief Resident of the Department of Radiology. Dr. Mathews then began a one-year Fellowship Program in Pediatric Radiology at the Baylor College of Medicine at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Mathews is board certified in Diagnostic Radiology by the American Board of Radiology and is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Louisiana.
Dr. Mathews worked as a staff radiologist at Women’s & Children’s Hospital in Lafayette for thirteen years. He was the medical director of Diagnostic Imaging Services for nine of those years and responsible for all pediatric and women’s imaging services. As the demand for his breast imaging services grew, Dr. Mathews became more involved and specialized in breast imaging and decided to focus his entire practice on breast imaging. He was the first medical director of Elaine Junca Breast Center at Women’s and Children’s Hospital. In 2008 Dr. Mathews decided to follow his passion and dream and founded his own independent breast imaging center, Breast Center of Acadiana.
